Jean Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development - 1071 Words
In this essay I want to analyse Jean Piagetââ¬â¢s (1936) stage theory of cognitive development and Erik Eriksonââ¬â¢s (1959) theory on stage development. Piagetââ¬â¢s theory focuses on cognitive development where Eriksonââ¬â¢s applies a more psychosocial lens. I will be analysing the key concepts of each theory and comparing them to see the similarities and differences in the theorists thinking. Piagetââ¬â¢s theory is made up of four stages. The first stage was the sensitometer stage. This occurs from birth to two years old. This breaks into sub stages, these are: simple reflexes, first habits and primary circular reactions, secondary circular reactions, coordination of secondary circular reactions, tertiary circular reactions, novelty, and curiosity andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦(Berk, 2013) The child also becomes able to grasp the concept of hypothetical situations Eriksonââ¬â¢s psychosocial theory of development looks to external factors on personality development from childhood to adulthood. Eriksonââ¬â¢s theory claims, every person must pass through a series of eight stages over the entire life cycle (Erikson, 1993) The first stage occurs between birth and 18 months and focuses on the infants needs being met by the parents .Bee and Boyd (2009) express parents are primary sources for developing this trust or mistrust in the eyes of the child. For example if the infant is regularly fed by the mother the child develops a trust that the mother will continue feeding them creating trust. However if the Mother fails to feed the child mistrust develops as their needs arenââ¬â¢t being met. The second stage occurs between two and three years old and looks at autonomy versus shame and doubt. Children have an opportunity to build self-esteem and autonomy as they learn new skills. ââ¬Å"Parents can foster autonomy by permitting reasonable free choice and not forcing or shaming the childâ⬠(Berk, 2013) The third stage occurs from three to five years old and examines initiative versus guilt. During this period children desires to copy adults and take initiative, creating make believe play situations.
